LGBT Fast Friday News 1/18/13

Fast Friday is a weekly feature in which I provide links to news items and other resources of interest to the LGBT community.

Check out my tongue-in-cheek DOMA Rap on the law office’s YouTube page. It was written the night before my guest lecture on same-sex marriage and LGBT rights to a group of family law paralegal students. Just for fun .. and hopefully to teach them something about DOMA.

Heterosexuals Using Their Weddings to Further Same-Sex Marriage Equality

Although I missed this article when it appeared in the NY Times (it was my birthday, perhaps I was distracted), I thought it was worth taking the time to pass it along after the fact.

It seems that a when heterosexual couple recently tied the knot in a traditional wedding ceremony, they added a special touch.  When the officiant presented the first reading, it was excerpts from a ruling by the Massachusetts Supreme Court in the case of Goodridge v. Department of Public Health.

“Without the right to choose to marry,” the officiant, Julie Maxwell, intoned, “one is excluded from the full range of human experience.”

You may recall that the 2003 Goodrich court concluded that same-sex marriage is a legal and civil right.

I don’t want to paraphrase the article, so I’ll just refer you to it.  It’s worthy of a read … and of passing on to your heterosexual friends who are planning weddings!

Election 2012 Victories for the LGBT Community!

With the 2012 elections now over, it is time to rejoice in the victories.  President Obama will serve 4 more years.  That is good news for the LGBT community. At least we don’t have to worry about an anti-marriage amendment for the next 4 years.

Maine and Maryland were victorious in ballot measures legalizing same-sex marriage in those states.  Minnesota’s voters struck down a proposed amendment that would limit marriage to one man and one woman.  Congratulations to everyone who worked so hard on those causes.  Three very solid victories!  It appears that Washington voters are also in the process of approving a referendum to allow same-sex marriage in that state (results won’t be final until some time today).

Openly gay legislators were elected last night, making for a more diverse and representative governing body.  Tammy Baldwin will be the first openly gay U.S. Senator!  What a strong victory for the LGBT community!  Can you tell I’m thrilled?

While preparing for the next election, it is your duty to educate as many people as you can about the issues faced by the LGBT community and why equality matters.  It’s not too early to start.  In fact, the earlier you start, the more you will prevail.  So don’t waste a moment.  Have every conversation you can possibly have with as many people as you can.  Arm yourself with solid information.  Give them copies of fact sheets and articles that discuss the LGBT issues of inequality and make them understand that when they vote, these important issues must be considered as well.

Congratulations to the entire LGBT community.  2012 will go down in history as being a year of victories!

Michael Bloomberg Pledges Additional $500,000 to Marriage Equality Campaigns

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has announced that he will contribute another $500,000 of his personal funds to support marriage equality campaigns in Maine, Minnesota and Washington state.

Washington United for Marriage received $250,000  supporting Referendum 74, which would uphold a gay marriage law approved this February by Washington lawmakers.  Senate Bill 6239 would legalize same-sex marriage and convert into a marriage on June 30, 2014, any undissolved state registered domestic partnership that does not involve at least one party aged 62 years or older.

Bloomberg pledged $125,000 to Mainers United for Marriage to support their efforts in the successful passage of Question 1 this November.  Question 1 seeks to overturn a voter-approved 2009 ballot measure that banned same-sex marriage in the state after Maine’s legislature approved same-sex marriages.  The governor signed the bill into law in May, 2009 and it was scheduled to go into effect 90 days after the legislature concluded its session.  The 2009 ballot measure stopped gay marriages before they began.

Minnesotans United for All Families received a $125,000 pledge to support its fight against Amendment 1, which would define marriage in that State as between one man and one woman.  North Carolina unfortunately passed a similar amendment this May.

“Marriage equality is the next big step in America’s long march of freedom,” Bloomberg said in a statement announcing the contributions. “I do not believe that government has any business telling one class of couples that they cannot marry.”

It is Bloomberg’s hope that his pledges will spur matching contributions.  Do your part, folks.  Marriage equality is everyone’s business whether it’s on the ballot in your own state or not.  If you can make a donation, now is the time to do it.  Time is running out.
