Civil Union will go into effect in the State of Illinois on June 1, 2011. Under that State’s law, civil union is available for heterosexual couples as well as gay and lesbian couples. One reason for that decision is that senior citizens, among others, form relationships after the death of a spouse and would like to re-marry but doing so might jeopardize their social security and pension benefits.
The Illinois Bar Association published an article titled, Estate Planning, Other Implications of the Civil Union Law. which is available as a .pdf file. If you reside in Illinois and plan to enter into civil union, you should give it a read.
