I’m sad to report that the voters of North Carolina voted in favor of Amendment One today. Although the final votes have not been fully counted, the vote has been called. The state already had a statute banning same-sex marriage. Today, it went even further to promote discrimination.
The problem is that Amendment One goes even further than prohibiting same-sex marriage. In fact, it could have strong negative consequences for heterosexual couples, as well. With all the anti-gay hype surrounding the ballot measure, many North Carolina voters weren’t even fully aware of what the Amendment would actually do.
It always saddens me when religious hysteria takes over otherwise sane and rational minds. In this case, that’s a pretty fair assessment of what happened. Televangelist Billy Graham’s 14-page ad against the amendment is a perfect example.
“The Bible is clear—God’s definition of marriage is between a man and a woman. I want to urge my fellow North Carolinians to vote for the marriage amendment,” read the advertisement.
It looks like Billy boy didn’t fully understand the darn thing, either.
In an earlier post today, I noted that only 36 percent of North Carolina voters understood the clear meaning of the amendment they were about to vote on! Um, that means that an overwhelming 64 percent of the voters had no idea! If that doesn’t frighten you, it should. Gay or straight, there’s no excuse for not understanding what you are actually casting a vote to accomplish. Period.
The end result: discrimination and restriction of civil rights.
Shame on you, North Carolina.
